Hereâs a shortcut for narrowing your list of possible candidates: Seek the advice and recommendations of the person you got your bird from, assuming heâs a reputable and knowledgeable breeder or retailer in your area. These folks know very well who practices good avian medicine and are happy to steer you in the right direction.
Board-certified specialists
Board-certified specialists of any kind are comparatively rare birds, indeed, especially if you donât live in a large urban area or near a college of veterinary medicine. Even more rare are board-certified avian specialists, especially those like Brian who limit their practice exclusively to the care of birds.
To become a specialist and to be entitled to add letters behind the DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine), VMD (Veterinary Medical Doctor), or the comparable titles in use around the world, a veterinarian must do more than what was required to graduate from a veterinary college. Specialists are called board-certified because testing for specialty knowledge is handled and those extra letters given out by what are called review boards, such as the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) or the American College of Veterinary Internal Medical Practitioners (ACVIM).
In the case of a board-certified avian specialist in the United States, the managing entity is the ABVP, which grants titles in Avian Practice along with comparable ones in Canine and Feline Practice, Feline Practice, Dairy Practice, and other areas of expertise.
To become board-certified by the ABVP, a veterinarian must have been in practice for five years and must pass a rigorous credentialing process and then study for and pass a test on a species specialty area. âSystemâ specialists, such as cardiologists (heart specialists) or oncologists (cancer specialists), work with all species, and earn their ACVIM letters after serving residencies and then passing their test. Only veterinarians who have been board-certified are allowed to call themselves âspecialists.â Currently, there are approximately 180 avian specialists around the world.
Brian is one of those specialists, and he has the extra letters after his name to prove it: Brian L. Speer, DVM, Diplomate, ABVP (Avian Practice), ECZM (Avian). What does all that mean? Board-certified individuals are awarded Diplomate status by whatever credentialing body is identified after the word â in this case, the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (in the Avian Practice category), and also the European College of Zoological Medicine (Avian specialty).
